Two Books Every Woman Should Read

I’ve got two books on the go and I’m torn as to which one to pick up first. My favored reading is escape literature - books I can lose myself in.  These two have jerked me wide awake, there's no escape in either of them.

When Everything ChangedA really good book - When Everything Changed. The Amazing Journey of American Women From 1960 To The Present, by Gail Collins. It is riveting and as "can't put down" as the travel sagas I tend to favor when in hibernation. I’m only part way through but will go on record as saying it’s one of the best “reads” I’ve had all year.  Give it to your daughters’, sisters’, and mothers’ to read. Then pass it on to the men in your life. Collins’ style is bright, fast moving.  Her detailed research and the stories to back up her findings are full of pathos, humor, shock and moments of startling revelation. The women’s movement is tied to civil rights, politics, equal opportunity; the progress we have made came one step at a time. I’m wearing slacks as I write; I have credit cards, a house, in my own name. I don’t have to ask permission of a husband to undergo a medical procedure.  Fifty years ago none of the above was possible for a woman. Buy "When Everything Changed" here.

Half The SkyHalf the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn
The title comes from a Chinese proverb noting that women hold up half the sky.
At a time of the year when we give thanks for the many blessings in life, this book is a harsh reminder of how privileged we are as western women. Half the Sky is a call to arms!  Women the world over are facing challenges, struggling to live, suffering inhumane treatment at the hands of governments and men.  This book, well researched and poignantly written is one of the most important books written on the subject of women.  Buy "Half the Sky" here.
