I do joyfully recommend, for your reading pleasure, the Diana Gabaldon series: Outlander; Dragonfly in Amber; Voyager; Drums of Autumn; The Fiery Cross, and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Prepare yourself for total enchantment. You’ll meet the main characters in the Outlander and she gathers new interesting characters in each of the following books. The genre is all encompassing: romance, history, mystery, and even a “smidge” of science fiction. Each book numbers from 1200 to 1500 pages, so it isn’t a quick read, nor do you want it to be. The author is a master at creating characters you like, admire, and even fall in love with. She describes scenery that transports you to the site. It’s poetry. The reader becomes immersed in life as it was in the mid 1700s…innocent, honest and exciting.
I read the series in mid 2007. This summer 2008 I am reading the series for the second time, and discovering that I was so immersed with the story line and characters during the first reading that I read too fast, couldn’t wait to see what happened next, but now I’m enjoying even more because I’m taking the time to absorb the poetry and writing skills of the author…I have to admit there are times I don’t answer the telephone or the door bell!
